How on earth do you set up a website?

Hello everyone,

I would like to set up a website - I have NO IDEA how to do this, put it this way, I'm not the most 'techically advanced' person in the world.

Anyway, I'm determined to do this - is there a dummy guide anywhere, that can help you through, for e.g how to buy the website name (I know what I want to call it!!) don't laugh, it's a start!!!

Thank you

SS

buy your website name from them, then build your site

use the Try It Out link to see what you can do with it
  • Ok, first question - have you built or do you know how to build a website?

Is it going to be an e-commerce site, an information site or another kind of site?

The reason I ask is because if it's just a personal site, you may want to start up a free blog first, get used to modding it and using it to build up your content before you venture into web design yourself.

You can name it something.bloghost.com, but you can also point your own domain name at it so you can call it the same as your website would be.

To get the name for your website, you need to register it and make sure it's available. Go to 123 reg co uk and type in the name you want. It'll show you if it's available and how much it is. I'd buy it through them too as they're very good VFM, especially if you're a beginner.

If you explain what your site is then I can help you further.
  • Are you going to put up a blog or an online business?

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for the replies.

The site I'd prefer not to give you the name, just in case someone steals it;)

I've looked up on those domain sites and the name already exists - I need it to be .com, instead of .co.uk.

Blogs - why do you reckon, I should have that, rather than the actual website, I was thinking of linking to a blog under the same name, and a twitter and facebook account off the website name.

Hope I'm making sense I'm creative but not all technical :oxxx

If the name already exists and it must be a .com, you will need to choose another name.

What are your requirements for the web site?

    - Do you intend to sell things and will you need to process credit cards directly on the web site?
    - Will you need a shopping cart and will you need to publish and regularly update a catalogue of products? Will you have a lot of products or just a few?
    - Do you intend to publish regular content i.e. is it a magazine style or news web site or will the content be fixed for a long time?
    - Do you intend to be advertising supported?

still havnt mentioned what TYPE of site it is, we dont need to know the name just the nature of it, are you selling stuff, is it for a venue, service or team?

  • Hi,

if you are seriously thinking about having your own website, consider hiring a web designer. Websites are like houses - theoritically you can build yours all by yourself but how long will it stand? And will it really look fine? Not to meniton that all this time you will spend on setting up your website you could spend on something else.
This does not have to be an expensive option if you choose your designer wisely. In fact I am a web designer so please feel free to contact me.

If you do not want to spend any money or just have very limited budget there are places where you can set up your website for free or for a few pound a month. I would never recommend this to any business though as you usually need to host adverts on your website or are very limited to what you can actually do with your website.
