I'm a broker, if you use a broker instead of dealing directly with an Insurer we do all of this type of thing for you. We would have picked the phone up to the Insurer and pointed out its covered and get them to pay for it, if they still kicked up we just ring one of the senior staff and it normally gets sorted.

Next time think about using a local broker (Not swintons), it may cost a few pound more but is just as likely to be the same cost.

If you need any more advice just post up here, like I said it would be easier or would have have been easier if you posted on the Insurance thread as there are plenty of us on there to help out. We all like helping MSE members so the others would equally like to have some input. If you do decide to post on there can you put a link to this thread (Just copy and past the web address (At the top of the page) into your thread as it will help them see the full details.

Like I said before Fortis are a very good Insurer and have a good reputation on travel claims, it should be fairly easy to sort your claim out (I assume its Travel Plan Direct who run the scheme who are saying no rather than putting it through to Fortis to look at).

If it does go to the Ombudsman it will take many months to resolve however the Ombudsman is very fair and looks at what it is fair and if a policy wording is ambiguous he will side with the policyholder.

You are a good broker, how can one guarantee that any broker, and any employee of any broker , would think to ask if you have an elderly rel with a recent critical medical history?

brokers actually want to ensure you sell a product thats suitable for the client and will pay their claims in an efficient way if needed. They want to build a long term relation with their customers as money is only really made when people renew policies. Also if there is a claim or a problem with the claim the client normally comes back to you personally for help so its very short sighted selling a policy you know is with a bade company or is not suitable as you will have to pick up the pieces.

People new to the business tend to sell policies on price alone, after gaining experience they will tend to learn you need to strike a balance between price and claims service and a most people will prefer to pay a bit extra if they have had an experience of a bad claim.

Advising of the medical warranty and that it applies to close family as well is something that should be done on a travel sale. I find you also need to prompt people as they do not realise the blood pressure tablets etc etc need to be declared
