Remember that printers sometimes need more than the ink/toner replacing and you need to look at all the prices involved. The Samsung CLP300 also needs a waste toner box (about £11 so not a lot) but also requires a replacement Imaging Unit (or drum). These are about £150 though they do last approx 20,000 pages.
  • Was just about to do a new post with a similar query, so glad I found this one.

Pretty much in the same boat, am just about to start Uni for 5 weeks (PGCE) and am now thinking that it'll be best to avoid the Uni costs, so am looking for something non-too flashy, quite compact, doesn't need to be excellent at printing graphics, something where replace the toner doesn't cost the earth. A scanner on it would be a plus, but not absolutely essential.

Does anyone have any make / model numbers in mind? How much should I realistically be looking to spend?

    Thanks in advance.

often a camera can be used instead of a scanner, especially if you are reducing the photo and accuracy is not important

Recommend you get a cheaper one of ebay, HP Laserjet 5N is a good one to go for, should be able to get one for under £30. As they are designed for office use they are good work horses. Plus you can pickup cheap toners on ebay

Also laser printers are power hungry due to the high wattage heat bulbs, so only have it turned on when you want to print then turn it off
