Broken meter

Options
Hello

when EON came to read my gas meter it was found to be broken and they were unable to take a reading. The meter has been replaced and I have been sent a bill of what they assume to be my usage which seems very high. This is my first bill from them and unfortunately I have not kept the bills from my previous supplier to use as evidence of possible useage.

Am I within my rights to refuse to pay this bill?

Thanks for any help.

In what way was it broken?
  • It just kept flashing 0000 in the meter reading display.

ask them to monitor your usage for the next 3 months, but you could suggest they contact your previous supplier to help them estimate a read for you

But you admit that you have used gas and therefore the only thing in possible dispute is how much?Perhaps your previous supplier could furnish copies? Have they estimated and if so,do you believe it is too high?

    Hi aquarian

Sounds like a stopped meter issue.

What normally happens in these cases is that we look at your current usage and then estimate what we thought you would have used whilst the meter was not recording. This will be based on current usage but will be adjusted to take into consideration seasonal fluctuations.

How long was the meter like this? Also, how long between fixing the meter and the estimated bill for past usage?

You mention this estimated bill is the first you have received from us. If you have only recently switched to us, was the meter stopped during the time the previous supplier provided your gas?

If not, we will have access to the Average Daily Consumption figures for your property. This will give us a good indication of past usage. Again, these figures can be seasonally adjusted.

I would give our consumption team a call. They deal with matters surrounding stopped meters. Ask how the estimated usage was calculated and tell them your concerns about the amount billed.

They will give you a detailed breakdown of the calculation used.

Sorry you have been a victim of a stopped meter and hope this helps a little. Give me a shout if I can help further.

    Malc :)
