  • Not really a direct answer but are you already insured as the policy holder on another car, ie. the one you are getting spares for? And if so, have you checked whether this policy allows you to drive "other cars with the owners permission"? Some do and some don't, but this is how I got my second-hand car home without insurance (although since I didn't have insurance myself, I actually got my dad to do it!)

As for getting quotes, I know Swinton offer it, but I don't know whether theirs is a good deal or not.
  • These people have been advertised on TV.

Not sure if they're any good though.

    www.tempcover.com

You can insure a car for up to 28 days me thinks.

IF the op's policy covers him to drive other cars it will exclude any car that belongs to him or is hired to him under a hire purchase agreement

That is a good point. For info, the wording on mine is:
"The Policyholder may also drive in the UK, any private motor car not owned by or registered to, and not hired, rented or leased to the Policyholder, their employer or business partner."

But anyway, some policies don't include this and so if yours doesn't say that then I guess not. Is there anyone else who could drive it for you? How do people usually drive home cars they have just bought?

They call their insurers/broker and get the car insured?

I've never seen a driving other cars clause which does not exclude driving a car owned by the policyholder or hired by the policyholder under a HP/lease agreement.
  • Even if you get someone else to drive the car, and their insurance policy covers this, the car needs to be insured by the owner for the individual to be covered. A short term policy is the answer.

    Quote, Raskazz,

I think Chrimoya was saying that not all policies include DOC (driving other cars) extension which is certainly true.
