Mobility Scooter - Maintenance

A friend of mine bought a brand new Shoprider Cadiz scooter 3 years ago and hasn't had it touched for maintenance or service since, not even washed or cleaned in any way. I noticed the steering seemed a bit wobbly when he came to my house the other day and he agreed that it was, I found there was a fair bit of play in both front wheel bearings, worse on the left (nearside). His response to this was to buy some oil to put in the bearings. I said this wouldn't cure the problem but he thinks it might slow down further wear. Personally I think that steering and control will deteriorate until one or both of the bearings collapses. Seemingly Shoprider recommend 6 monthly checks. Has anyone any idea what the average cost of a service is on one of these machines. They are heavy and complex machines and shouldn't just be run into the ground, surely?
