iPod Trouble

Help. For no reason I cannot connect my Ipod to iTunes. When I dock my iPod I get the message "USB Device not recognised" What is going on? It's not what I want to read when I have just downloaded a considerable amount of tunes and I cannot transfer them onto my iPod.

Try disconnecting, then rebooting your PC and rebooting the iPod (if it's a 4G model, flick the hold switch, flip it back, then press and hold the center button and MENU portion of click-wheel for 10 seconds until the apple icon appears on the screen). Start iTunes and reconnect iPod to PC.

Gosh this is really scary as I have loads of important files stored on my iPod in addition to plenty of music files. I hope you get it sorted soon so I can sleep comfortably knowing that it is nothing serious.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

I had a similar problem just after christmas with a freinds video ipod. no matter what I tried updated software ect it was unreconised. It had been taken to the local apple store at the trafford centre and they transfered a few tracks to it to show it works.

How many people know that they are configured diferently for mac and Windows? neither did I untill I read about other people with the same problem. I had to wipe the Ipod and format it for use with a pc.

If you're still having problems, wander over to the apple.com discussion boards. My own ipod decided to refuse to reset yesterday and just came up with the apple icon. I ended up putting into disk mode http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 then plugging it into the computer where it still wan't recognised by itunes, then using disk utility to verify and then repair it, whereupon itunes recognised it and its now happily working. I'm a mac user, so I don't know how you do this on a PC. Anyway, the apple boards are a mine of info on this subject.

Thanks for all your suggestions, unfortunately, none have worked. To clarify the problem this is what happens:

When I connect my iPod to my computer via a USB cable, the following error message comes up.

    "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance for solving this problem, click this message."

And when I click on the message, a popup comes up and says,

    "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
The location of the device is shown in bold type.
    Recommendation
Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize the device, replace the device."

And the iPod comes up as Unknown Device on this menu. I've tried reconnecting the device. And don't happen to have an extra USB cable, so I couldn't try it with another cable.

I have spent a few days studying the apple forum and have found pages and pages of people experiencing the same problem BUT THERE IS NO SOLUTION!

I'm assuming you've tried it in another USB port? I think it's going to be a matter of trial an error (well you know this already). If you haven't already done it, can you try it on another pc? If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with a Mac. It's strange but sometimes moving it from one system to another can shock it into working. I connect mine via firewire, is that a possible option for you?

I have tried all the USB ports with no luck but I did think about taking it to a friends house to connect it up to their PC to "shock" it- if that doesn't work it will have an even bigger shock when I launch it from the end of my boot :D

I know how you feel - I have 4 ipods in the house, and the only one that gives no trouble at all is my husbands first gen one. Did you try putting it into disk mode before attaching it to your PC?
