Can banks charge a 16 year old?

My son has recently opened an 'Adapt' account for 11-18 year olds with the nat west. It has no overdraft facility and simply provides a debit card. Although the terms and conditions of the account state that Standing orders and Direct debits are not permitted from this account they have allowed him to set up a direct debit with the local gym. The last payment has not been successful and although the account has not been taken overdrawn they have written to inform that a charge will be applied, although they have not specified an amount or the date it will be taken. Can banks charge a 16 year old? His only source of income is a Saturday job paying £25 a week and I'm confident the charge they apply will be more than this.

The answer is NO so take that point up with NatWest and ask for a final response letter from them to take it to the FOS.
Is there an age limit for gym membership as an individual?
I am not sure his contract with the gym is legal since he is still classed as a minor for the purposes of the law.0 -

i don't think going in to the bank and saying my son is under 16 you shouldn't charge him it will work. Surely if they can't then the Adapt account will be excempt from all charges and not from all but the unpaid fee??0 -
Willo, please don't be silly. Why is the unpaid item fee not exempt?i don't think going in to the bank and saying my son is under 16 you shouldn't charge him it will work. Surely if they can't then the Adapt account will be excempt from all charges and not from all but the unpaid fee??
Answer: because Standing Orders and Direct debits are not permitted on the account so it isn't something that the bank would have considered to be exempt cos the payment request is not allowed on the account.
This one is not rocket science and I guarantee the OP they will get it refunded.
I haven't lost one case yet
