Why can't I log out???

I'm guessing that this is a problem with my PC and it not deleteing cookies?I think that, a long time ago, I registered on MSE under the name that I am using now for this thread. However, I registered recently with another name, having forgetten all about this name, and have been posting under new name.
A few days ago I came onto the site and for some reason this name was showing. I clicked 'log off' and got a message saying all cookies had been cleared, only to come back into the forum and find I am still having major identity problems!
Is there anyway that I can go back to being the old me, or will I have to continue the rest of my life as a green piglet? Is it something to do with cookies not being deleted?
Can anyone help, and if you can, please can you remember that I know how to turn the PC on and off and thats about it - in otherwords, talk to me slowly if there is something I can do!!!
