Travelling to Far East in October, taking in Bangkok, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Japan. We have Pound Sterling, and would like advice on which currency is best to cover all countries, baring in mind that we are on a cruise ship, with 3 days in Bangkok, and 3 days in Beijing.

  • We are cruising the Far East in October, spending 3 days in Bangkok, cruisng to Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and then 3 days in Beijing China. Would like to know what is the best currency to take with us to cover these different countries. We have pound sterling to exchange.

American dollars are widely accepted in Vietnam - and that is a restricted currency that you can't get outside of the country. Would it be worth speaking to the tour operator? I'd be invlined to take out small amounts with a nationwide cash card as I went along...
  • singapore, vietnam, bangkok, china, - in these I used local currency from an atm on arrival. Its really easy there are atm's in all the popular locations. In Vietnam earlier this year they gave better prices for dealing in Dong so it may be worth making sure you have a Nationwide card for withdrawls (can only get the money in the country)

not sure about the other countries or cruise ship.
  • Would it be worth speaking to the tour operator?

You can always try, I once asked NatWest's Foreign Currency Dept if they could supply the cash for Macau, they hadn't even heard of it, (casinos there had more
turnover than Vegas I think). When they eventually looked it up they gave me the wrong answer - "Dollars", then asked her if she could help me with my Dong
but she got the wrong idea!
  • When I went to Beijing last year I was advised to take US dollars to change to the local currency once there as they are accepted more readily than Euros or Sterling. Had no problems exchanging them, and also managed to use my card (can't remember if it was debit or credit - sorry) to withdraw further cash.
