If the computer was advertised with Windows XP then take it back to where you purchased it from. A place that installs non genuine OS's says it all, so I'd be looking for a full refund and not buying from them again!
  • Hi,
This can happen if major componets such as HD, Graphics Card etc have been changed. XP sommetimes asks to be reactivated. I would'nt bother with XP anymore as its no longer supported. (No downloads or new updates)Save your £95 and wait for Windows 7 (Oct 22 release date)
    Good luck!

Windows XP is supported with updates and security patches until April 2014.

  • IT was supposed to be unsupported last year - but then the netbook revolution hit M$ so I suppose they have reconsidered. I have been out of the M$ loop for sometime and not up to speed since Mr Gates and I left them!

They stopped free support for XP in May. It's still supported with updates ect and you can pay for support (not that you would need to use it)
  • I wonder... is there a valid COA stuck to the case?
  • in a command prompt window type you might need to be admin, right click and "run as.."

    slmgr -rearm

that will give you another 30days for you to decide to wait for Windows 7 or try the COA again

You could vape windows and install Ubuntu, or some other Linux distro.
  • if you have received a pc with a naff copy of windows on it, depending on the circumstances around it, microsoft may be able to help you.

Have a look at the link above. Should give you some idea of how to proceed if you want to try and rectify the issue.
