Can I add two pennorth here? {as I'm 4 months into my BR].....
You are quite right to stop paying things....take out your cash soonest, after all.....since you have decided to move, you will need lots of new basic household items, furnishings, bedding, etc...wont you?? ??

You have decided to get a basic bank acount...Co-op seems to me to be the most BR friendly bunch..however..

Apply now for a new, Cashminder account.....transfer all essential DDs..maybe even open a 2nd account, Cashminder {I did]...as an essential payments account, into which you transfer your total essential payments each month, the dD's coming out of that account...that way, once all essentials have been transferred, you'll know exactly how much you have left for food, petrol and niceties.

Once the accounts are up and running, with the Co-op, subsequent BR doesn't affect them.....all they require is the letter or fax from the OR stating the OR has no interest in your accounts.

Open the accounts over the phone, or online...its easier..and Co-op have a dedicated office for BR's so speaking to them is a great mind-ease.

My two accounts suffered not one iota......even after I phoned the co-op [in MAnchester, wherever that is]....after my Court hearing, the nice lady said thank you for the info, it was simply 'noted', but nothing would actually happen/be done, until the actual letter/fax was recieved from the OR....which actually was about 5 weeks later!

[As an aside, with Co-op, if you sign up for the dividend [costs a quid], then incomings into your bank account are counted towards the divvy payout...maybe a hundred quid for normal pay packets, over a year??.....gotta be better than paying bank charges??]

if you start looking for a rented house now, then you aren't actually BR , so the agent or LL need not know...at present.
[My OR so far hasn't told my letting agent/LL a thing, and probably wont....he didn't even ask for a sight of my tenancy agreement!]

Are you completing the legal documents online with teh Insolvency Service?

I did this, a bit of a trawl, yet I could print off the correctly-worded legal dox for the court..plus, the OR can then access all this and my SOA online..which I'm sure saved them a lot of time ..and hastened the end of my telelphone interview?

best of luck, you can now start looking forwards, and simply deal with day-to-day life...the pressure is off!

Sounds like you've got a plan!

Halifax WILL close your account so be sure you do open another one.

Be sure to put that £5,000 under the mattress to spend on essentials. In fact - don't leave any money in your bank accounts.

How do you sign up for the dividend?

    The Co-op divvy.......hey hey :j!!! Where do I sign up? :)
Brightonlass - am presuming you're attending the Brighton Court? If so it is indeed best to open your new Co-op account on the day (or day after) of your BR as the brighton OR has a penchant for all accounts (by all accounts!) I didn't have any trouble opening my account I just popped into the branch same day - I was very nervous but didn't need to be as the staff were lovely - I took my passport with me which they did need to photocopy for ID. I only had a couple of DD's to change over - I was told I had to 'pop into the branch' to sort these out but in fact that was rubbish as you can sort it over the phone.

BTW Good luck & welcome :))))))))))

Thanks Alistair - I've just joined. I shop in the Co-op sometimes (certainly the £10 per week) so should get points there and I had a quote this week for home insurance that I'm going to go with - may look at motor insurance at renewal.

FYI I wouldn't bank on them knowing of your BR - its best to make sure your policies are all okay.

  • Thanks for that Alasdair :)
Sadly the Co-op store in my area has closed but I'll certainly look at home & car insurance when they come up for renewal - top tip :D

  • Hello again.
Well my plan went out the window. Just in terms of dates. I stopped my mortgage and DMP payments last month and have just had my day in Brighton County Court. I did register with the Insolvency thingie and completed my forms online. Quite easy to do and I think it is quicker in the long run. I was told I would see the judge but after 2 hours of waiting we were told to go downstairs and pickup the completed paper work. OR would contact me in a week. All going OK so far! Now about the mortgage... I want to hand the keys back as I am leaving the UK. Would I be right in going in to the bank and advising I can no longer pay the mortgage? I can't, I'm on JSA and having no luck finding a job at the moment (hence me leaving). I have a secured loan on the propety and wonderd if anyone as some advice on this.
