Till till till
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Unfortunately, tills do it all for you now, so you don't have to think. So when a situation like this arises, most cashiers can't think quick enough.

I have to laugh, although I completely understand! I am only 26 but when I worked in a shop at 16 our tills didnt add up, or work out how much change to give and nothing in the shop had prices on. If we wanted to keep our jobs we had to learn the prices, (we could look them up in the shop if we had the time) and be accurate with our maths. It was a good teaching method really.

I do think sometimes we rely to much on technology but in the cashiers defense, if it was something she had never done before and wasnt expecting to do so today, she was probably a little stressed about it, so it could have been a reson for some of the errrors.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
  • I used to work on tills, both manual type and the computerised touch screen.
Now my maths isn't carol vorderman but i can add and subtract, which i think should be a minimum for till workers, but unfortunately as most shops like that only pay minimum wage etc. they can't be too picky on who they hire.
The girl might of also been flustered and slightly panicked as she was in a situation that wasn't normal for her.

Did you stop to think that she may have some kind of learning disability and you just made her feel like she was totaly worthless?

Oh, so it's ok to get over-charged and short-changed if someone has a learning difficulty? If they can't do the job properly, they shouldn't be working there...

Maybe you should be a bit more tolerant of other people, having to wait a few extra minutes out of your day I'm sure had no real consequence for you

I'm very tolerant and usually quite patient. And actually, yes, there was a consequence, I was 5 minutes late for an appointment...

There is another side to this as well - the cashier will likely get hammered by management as her till (assuming this was the norm) is not going to balance and might very well lose her job anyway.

I suppose people will need to take you word for that.
I never said it was OK to be overcharged or short changed but it does kind of sound like you were a bit intimidating and she may have got flustered as a result.
If you were pushed for time then perhaps you should have just left your items and gone on to your appointment so you wern't late?
I'm not spoiling for an argument just giving my view on your post

Well, due to the nature of my job, I have to be patient and tolerant and make sure I stay calm when speaking to people. I certainly wasn't intimidating towards the cashier, especially at the start. I understand that people make mistakes, as do I, but there is a mistake and then there is a lack of intelligence.

And as for why I didn't just leave the items and get to work: the simple answer is I can't leave work during the day, as there is only me here and if I had left the items there, I would have had one sandwich to last me until 7pm tonight.

I may have lost out on a few pence due to this situation, but I damn well wasn't going to go hungry for it as well!!!

I was more going along the lines of you correcting her mistakes was doing her a favour - but whatever makes you smile :O)
