Must admit I found ancestry to be very honest and helpful. Joined for a year on a special offer. Found after a week of using that they really don't have the Scottish Birth records etc, phoned, contract cancelled and money repaid to card, no arguments only apoligies.
  • The so called 14 day free trial is a con because last year I signed up on the basis you could cancel within 14 days. However i tried to do so on day 12 only to suddenly find you had to cancel within 10 days. Furthermore the !!!!!!!s bill you again the next year (if you did the annual subscription) to the credit card despite me cancelling it last year and being stung to the tune of £86.

When I signed up for the 14-day free trial, I set myself a reminder to cancel it the day before the free trial expired. I did cancel it then, and I wasn't charged.

Are you sure you didn't just get the dates wrong? It certainly sounds like something went wrong somewhere. If it was me I would send them an email explaining the sequence of events and asking them to investigate. If it turns out they really did refuse to let you cancel within the 14-day trial period, and if it also turns out they really did charge you for another year even though you had cancelled, you shouldn't have much trouble getting your money back.

Just browsing and found this thread.

Ancestry is just about one of the most upfront honest companies Ive ever dealt with on the net. Ive had a sub for over 6 years and even back then the terms were absolutely clear and spelt out what you had to do to cancel if you didnt want to continue.

If either the above complainants had telephoned and explained the situation I have no doubt the company would have bent over backwards to help them and refund them.
  • My god, these con merchants get everywhere. I mean, they use every trick in the book to get a hold of your credit card. I cannot imagine how hard it was to be pinned to the floor as they extracted the details.

And then to leave school at the age of 18 and not be able to read bank statements. Incredible.

So although ancestry.co.uk do the trial differently now and make it far more transparent, what can I do about the misleading trial that I signed up for unknowingly 9 months ago?
Send them screen prints of the "less than transparent" webpages that you signed up to.
Write saying that you are pleased that they are now clear about things, but ask them what they propose to do about those poor souls who were conned earlier.

That should do it, shouldn't it?

I signed up 6 years ago and the terms were just as transparent then.
