  • I'd steer clear of gumtree alltogether! Someone tried to email me saying they had a flat but were being very vauge of its exact whereabouts. I just said I was intrested to get more info and the next email was 'I want you to do a western union transfer...' Luckily I didnt fall for it.

    Wasnt there some horror story on the news this week about gumtree too?

    Newsbeat has discovered that more and more young people looking for somewhere to rent are being conned out of thousands of pounds in online scams. Trading Standards say there's been a big rise in the number of would-be tenants falling for it and websites like Gumtree and Craigslist aren't doing enough to protect them.

    This was on watchdog of gumtree scam going around where bogus landlords were pretending to rent out flats even though they didnt own the property and the flats had sitting tenants people got scammed out of deposits

    I'm in Pimlico (and round here is cheaper than Chelsea by miles ;)) and I pay £800pcm for a room in a shared house - the cheapest studios here are £200 p/w...so no way would you find anything for £500pcm!
