Moving calls away from BB provider

I am planning to move away from my longstanding BB provider, Nildram (aka Tiscali) in January when my contract expires as, although I have upgraded my package, my speeds are just not acceptable and no amount of tweaking on the PC/router side is making an ounce of difference. Having visited a neighbour over the road, who is on the same exchange with BT, I have discovered she is enjoying 8Mb when I am lucky to get 2Mb.
Looking at my exchange and the customer feedback on here and other sites, O2 looks like it would be a good alternative.
However, I switched my calls away from BT a couple of years ago as I was so sick of them and over to Nildram. I am no longer in contract for calls with them so wish to move these across but am unsure what I need to do to switch as I would like to get shot of BT line rental and combine again with another provider.
Can I just phone the new provider and ask for calls/line rental to be merged even though they are current with different providers?
Thanks
