Help with <DIV> s - cross browser problems

Hi

I have a website and I have just reorganised it to work a little better, however, i must have upset the CSS on the index page. So now if I add a closing </DIV> to the end of the content it works perfect for IE. But for Chrome, Opera etc the right menu moves into the content area. If I remove the closing </DIV> it breaks for IE and the right hand menu appears under the main content, but then it works perfectly in the alternative browsers.

So, a fix for one browser breaks the site in another. I am unsure how to identify how I can get this working in all browsers. I cannot obviously see anything wrong.

Anyone who can help PM me and I can pass you my URL.

Thanks in advance

  • your HTML markup is wrong on your index page.
div id="rightcontent" is inside div id="leftcontent" which, looking at other pages isn't consistent.
search google for firefox web developer toolbar, or ie developer toolbar & spend 20mins learning how they can help you.

    Hi

The problem is the page is not made up in a standard way, there is a template.phtml page that is used in conjuction with index.phtml, so this separates content from overall design. I will look into the toolbars, and what you have discovered too.

    Thanks

CSS is designed to seperate content and layout you should NOT be using php to generate html layout. unless your procedurly generating the entire page.

PM me the link and ill give it a go.

    </center>

the div seeallbrand is NOT closed properly, add a </div> tag before the centre tag. (Firefox fixes your error by adding a div for you)

HOWEVER all your code is really really really really appalling, go validiate your page with w3c and it shows 218 errors, ok most are because of improperly closed tags but there are loads of geniune errors in there.
Your code needs to validate before you start solving cross browser compatability problems.

Go find a book or website on html fundamentals as it will help you a lot.

    Hi

I had the site and page design developed. I am not the responsible party. The site works on a template and the content is delivered into the content area. To unscramble this would be a problem for me.
