I assume this is what they give old gits ... so checkout staff are warned they're dealing with cantankerous old "I fought in the war you know" types :P

Oh no, not at all. "We shall fight them on the beaches" and "I fought against Hitler for you!" was my Dad's generation.

Mind you, my generation also fought on the beaches; at Brighton, and other coastal resorts, especially on Bank Holiday weekends.:rotfl:

It would be hilarious, people saying they are one poster to one person and another poster to another person............................................(the same goes for many of the boards).

In my small town, the teenagers who were anybody, were Mods. It was a really small place though, so none of us fought.

Rockers were, largely, the previous 'generation' of youngsters, born in or right at the end of the War, who seemed to us just like their Mums & Dads. The old motor bikes & dark clothes harked back to a previous era.

Mod was about having style and being proud of one's appearance; hence the scooters, with their chrome crash bars, multiple mirrors and non-functioning lights. As transport, they were slow and unsafe, but 50 of them, travelling in convoy, was an impressive sight. Mod or rocker, young people emphasised their independence by getting about in a way their parents rarely did. ('Any way, anyhow, anywhere I choose.' :D)

As a grammar school kid, I found it hard to follow fashion, let alone own a scooter, on my 30 bob a week from Tescos. By the time I'd landed something well-paid, up in the smoke, Hippie was in the ascendant. Rubbish timing, as usual!:o
  • The Rockers were the last of the Teddy Boys - who were terrifying at the time. Gangs of bored boys with brylcreemed hair with leather (hmmm, not real leather), all with knives and knuckle dusters. They were very unpleasant and were guaranteed to ruin a barndance with broken bottles and chairs flying.

    Glad that era is over...

In Sainsbury's I always sail through the checkout with oodles of booze without so much as a blink.

As soon as I get to the cigarette counter, I have to have my driving license ready. I mean, at 29 years old I need id to buy ciggies but not booze
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

Yes, I remember going to see Chuck Berry & The Who at the Albert Hall around 1969, and being amazed to see about a thousand Teddy Boys, the like of whom I'd not seen since I was about eight.

As soon as Chuck Berry started, they were all on their feet, dancing in the aisles, which was fine. However, when he finished and the Who were due on, the trouble began, with rows of seats being ripped-up and thrown in all directions. Being in my mid- hippie phase by then, I probably said something like: 'Hey man, these dudes are so uncoool!' and hid behind my International Times.:o

Anyway, the lasting image I have is of lines of police, running in from both sides of the stage, grabbing some of the Teddy Boy miscreants and hauling them away, much to the delight of the majority audience. Most of the Teds were 30 -40 years old and, seeing the game was up, the ones near me decided to leg it.

If I remember correctly, rock music was banned from the Albert Hall for quite a few years after that. Seemed grossly unfair at the time, but then, so did most things!:rotfl:

Cool. Took my kids to see Chuck Berry (among others) at a festival last year - I have a lovely memory of my 2 year old, fast asleep in front of Chuck at full volume, with a massive pair of ear defenders on. Had a lovely photo, too - but the camera got nicked. :(
