No such thing as a silly question :D

If you think of the guttering which goes around your house or shed, okay.
That water drain off and down pipes attached to your house.

When you buy a water butt it usually comes with a kit, which enables you to self cut into these plastic pipes and divert the water down into a butt, rather than free rainwater going down the drain.

A water butt is then a round barrel type affair which collects this water, a tap is on the bottom which you then fill your watering can with and thus water your plants which are in pots.

    Hope that helps :D

As it has been said, almost all veggies will germinate on a windowsill and continue to grow there quite happily until its time for them to go outside, after they have been hardened off.

I haven't got a greenhouse, and in my garden there is no practical space(yet) for a veggie patch, but I've recently bought some veggie seeds to try and grow.

I've been cutting off the tops of lemonade/squash bottles, hoping to plant the seeds in the bottom part, and use the top part to place on top as a tiny 'greenhouse'.

Don't know if its a silly idea or not (and not very pretty/although green and recycling) but am going to give it a go. Will let you know how I get on!

No i don't think thats a silly idea, infact I'm sure I've seen it in the garden mags.

Remember also to drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the bottles to allow for drainage.

For saucers use, washed out food trays / caulslaw pots anything like that.

You could drink lots of the fizzy stuff and make a full size greenhouse.

Not a silly question but I think it has already been answered adequately already.

Probably a better question is where do I get one?

I've just been told (but don't know if it is true) that you can't get them for love nor money and they are selling on ebay for well over the odds.

Question is, do I flog the one I've got and make money or hold on to it so that I can water my garden later?

The other question is, will there be enough rain to fill one?

(still wondering whether I can be bothered to pump water out of the bath into a butt....)

I have used the top from plastic bottles as mini-cloches and to try and protect my plants from the slugs. Did work sometimes :rotfl:

But nothing wrong with that at all. Sounds like a very good idea to me.

I've no idea how easy they are to buy since I havn't got one and never thought of having one. The first place I would try is your water authority, they do good deals.

We have got an outside tap and I just fill a watering can for the pots. These no need to water plants which are planted in the garden, apart from the very first time you plant them that is. :D

If the plants in the garden start dieing off from lack of water then we are all in trouble.

Id hang on to it.Where we are there may be a standpipe this summer instead of the mains.Well I know you cant drink the water from a butt ,but you could flush the loo with it if you dont have any plants to water. No shotrage of them here, wilkinsons are selling them.
