Can you make a Green House?

Hi,

We want to grow our own veg but don't want to fork out on a green house - or even one of the plastic cheaper alternatives you can buy. Does any one have any ideas/tips for growing good veggies? :money:

I'm not so hot with the green fingers, but you can get sheets of corrugated see through plastic for between £6.50ish for a 6 foot sheet and £10.50ish for a 10 foot sheet.
If you fancy a bit of DIY, you could make a little timber frame and screw the sheets on.
My mum and dad have sheets on the roof of their shed, and it's nice and warm in there when the sun shines.

We got a mini greenhouse from Focus a couple of weeks ago for £13.99. DH had planned to make one but decided that for that price it wasn't worth bothering.

When we had our patio doors replaced, we kept the old ones and placed against a wall, they made a temporary greenhouse/coldframe. - they were a bit heavy if you wanted to move them around though.

Also, keep your eyes on the ads in the local paper, there are occaisonally greenhouses free, you just have to dismantle and rebuild.

Just one word of warning, greenhouses are NOT frost free over winter unless you heat them.

You could try some of the gardening websites, there are some out there with forums like MSE.

I got rid of a greenhouse that way - I had an old aluminium 10 by 8 greenhouse that was in the garden when we bought the house, and I wanted to get rid of it. I posted a message on a gardening forum, and someone was delighted to turn up and take the whole thing down and cart it away. Saved me a lot of work, and he was very happy too!

    Worth a try....

You can grow loads just with cloches so long as they are tall enough. You only really need the plastic or glass covering to make it a bit warmer so from about now, most stuff can grow in the earth. I made my cloches from plastic and wire and have fleece from poundland to cover things like fruit and anything the birds will peck(brassicas).

I have a greenhouse that was already here when we moved in but my cold frames are home made. The frames are made from scraps of old wood with a hinged lid surround, the lid and sides have sheets of polycarbonate cut to size and siliconed into place. It doesn't look very pretty but I'm not so great at DIY! I also have a freestanding "frame" of breezeblocks with old old window on top.

I have just seen 2 or 3 greenhouses offered on freecycle, can't remember what area though it's either maidstone or Brighton

Yeah there's a few on freecycle have a look there. I got one free and just built it up cost me about £60 for the bits i needed. i.e

    Base (sand, cement, slabs, bricks)
Greenhouse Bits ('w' clips, 'z' clips and nuts and bolts)

So you still need to spend a little to get your greenhouse up and running.
