The Big Issue

Sorry if this is not the right board but I hope someone will be able to give me some info......
Was in town this evening and bought the Big Issue from a seller - I got talking to him and he said that he still had to get another £7 together before he could get a bed at the shelter for tonight and then he needed to get more together for food.
Before I could find out more he got another customer so I left him to it. But sitting here now in my comfy chair with my cuppa and some biscuits I'm still thinking about him and hoping he's OK.
Does anyone know how the system works - how can a bed in a shelter cost even £7? I thought they were free? How much do the Big Issue sellers get for their efforts?
Thanks everyone.

They get a certain amount of free copies of the magazine and can purchase more at 75p a copy. They sell for £1.50 a copy. What they earn is really down to how good they are at selling it.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. OK thanks. Don't they get help with shelter and stuff or is it just a kind of employment thing?:hello:0

Nah, they have to earn it. You only get HB if you have a house!0

I think you'd get a much better response to this if it was moved to Discussion Time or The Arms.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

I believe they are given routes to get advice, but the Big Issue doesn't offer them shelter, no. The point of the project is to get them to earn (rather than beg) for money and manage the finances gained well.
The Big Issue isn't just for homeless people sleeping on the street by the way, it's also for people in temporary 'unstable' accommodation.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential.
