Put it this way. What if you suddenly saw women wearing t-shirts saying 'Natural birth is best' or 'No forceps is best' or 'Having a full term pregnancy is best' or 'Saying no to an epidural is best'. These are all things that every mother would like to happen, but sometimes you just have no choice in the matter and it would surely be hurtful to someone who had to have a caesarean/forceps/an epidural/a premature birth. How would you feel about such t-shirts?

That is completely different to breastfeeding. Babies arrive in the world in all sorts of ways but what's important is that they arrive alive and healthy with an alive and healthy mum. Caesareans etc may not be 'natural' but who wants the alternative of lots of dead mums and babies?

Breastfeediing on the other hand is something 'most' people can do to give their child the best start in life. It is the 'natural' way like it or not.

OMG i can't believe you feed your LO in the toilet! Seriously I've been bfeeding for more than five years now (not the one child, keep gettng pregnant:rolleyes:) and never once had a negative remark while feeding out and about. Most people don't even notice, especially if you choose a seat that you have your back to everyone.

Couldn't agree more. I've been BF on and off for 14 years and have never sat in a toilet. I've always used the corner of a cafe etc. It's easy to be discreet once you've got the hang of it. A good tip is to pop your change bag on the table in front of you to act as a barrier. Most people are lovely and if they twig you are BF they'll turn away and give you privacy. Of course you do sometimes get those old ladies that tell you it's wonderful to see a baby being BF and alert everyone to it :o
  • Breast feeding is not the done thing in the area that I live in, I have one friend who is about to give up after 4 months of breastfeeding as she has had enough of the comments and another who good for her is just brazen enough to take it, obviously were discrete enough to sit with our backs to people, keep our selfs covered up etc,

It seems silly to me that one people who are offended by these t shirts have looked at this post, surely there not going to buy one and two every one seems to think its all black and white some people breast feed some people don't some people combine feed as long as you feed them, and if someone wants to put there child in a t shirt that encourages breast feeding which does have advantages then why shouldn't they, i personnally don't but have found this post usefull because there is a link to some nice feeding tops that are a little bit different to the norm, so thanks to the person who posted.

I am absolutely :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:at the irony of a badge that proclaims to the world that "Yes I breastfeed and it's none of your business". It's quite logical to inform strangers whereever you go of something that isn't their business isn't it? :D

Anyone know of any good deals on "My dad has a PhD", "My parents earn £100,000 per month" and "Mummy cooks everything from scratch" t-shirts I want to buy for my friends' children? They worked hard for/at all those things and must be proud of it so I don't think it sounds smug or crass.
  • Thanks for posting this thread, I've just ordered a couple of T-shirts.

I love breastfeeding, and if that makes me smug, then so be it. In my experience, for every woman that can't breastfeed there are several that won't.

As someone said previously, this site is all about moneysaving, and breastfeeding is free, as opposed to spending around £15 a week on Artificial milk.

Wow, I am so looking forward to having children and meeting lots of BF evangelists who will shove their views down my throat... not.

Give other mums a break eh? I'm sure you're all doing your best, it is not a competition.

As you have admitted, some women simply can't breastfeed despite trying, so your t-shirt is doing nothing except make them feel like crap. For those who are determined not to, I don't imagine it'll make much difference either. It's just utterly pointless.

I am feeling more and more sorry for my friend reading some of these comments. :(

Yes, babies arrive in all sorts of ways but there is no denying that a natural, full-term birth without forceps is the most desirable outcome. So what about those lucky enough to experience that broadcasting it to the world on a t-shirt?

Or maybe we could have t-shirts that say 'I gave up work and stayed at home to raise my children, ner ner'? That's a pure lifestyle choice, isn't it?

Gosh yes 'happy mum happy baby' is always my mantra. I would NEVER want a mother to feel the things you describe. BUT there is no doubt that BF is best, even if a mum can only manage it for one day.

So, you're saying that women who BF are lucky? Some undoubtedly do take to it like a duck to water but it's a struggle for others (such as you describe above) especially in the first few weeks. Those who choose to persevere through the pain and tiredness will often tell you that it becomes easy, much easier than bottle feeding in fact. So, no it's not always luck, it's sheer determination.

Or maybe we could have t-shirts that say 'I gave up work and stayed at home to raise my children, ner ner'? That's a pure lifestyle choice, isn't it?

I am sure these things exist somewhere, probably in America. Along with 'I'm proud to home-ed, no bully filled school for my kids' and 'my kids get their 5 a day, never eat sweets and don't know what a TV is' ;)

Ok I'll see how it is best for the children if I have to again go through the round the clock horrendous nightmare (I do not exaggerate) I did last time. It'd be interesting to see how well my existing child with special needs copes when virually no attention can be afforded to her while I'm glued to the couch for 2 months crying and bleeding from my nipples.

By the way if someone "won't" breastfeed I won't consider it any of my business Ill
just be grateful if they don't bring it up to kick people to death whilst claiming sickness benefit for their addiction to cider. I think lack of mothers breastfeeding is one of the lesser problems this country has!

I looked at this thread because I'm pregnant and wondered where there was a bargain. Confrontational slogans on tshirts in general are a little too cringeworthy for me anyway.
  • i think that t shirt slogan is pretty rude myself:
"I like my milk from mummy not just any old cow!"
