I always feel a little sorry for mothers who (for whatever reason) can't breastfeed. A friend of mine got very down about trying and failing to breastfeed her baby and felt a failure giving him formula milk.

I know that breast is best etc, but sometimes the breastfeeding lobby can be insensitive to the distress of those mothers who just can't do it. By all means, support those who really want to breastfeed - but accept that it doesn't always work out. I guess what I'm trying to say is - what is the point these t-shirts are trying to make?

Sorry OP, I know it's probably not the time or the place to make this point and I am not getting at you :o It just struck a chord with me as all this is so recent and painful for my friend.

  • I agree with the last post - I find them a bit pointless.
If you want to breastfeed, breastfeed - if you can't or don't want to, don't.

More to the point and less long winded than my post. Thanks.

I feel the need to enter this debate. There is a lot of urban myth and misinformation out there about both breastfeeding, or feeding with artificial breast milk, or co sleeping.

I think it is a PARENTS RIGHT TO MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION based on un biased reasearch. Not just the information the mis informed (and yes they do still exist) midwife/health visitor/neighbour/family member has been given mainly in the past by companies who make the large amounts or money from breast milk substitute.

There is also, as one poster rightly points out a lot of women out there who wanted to breast feed but had to stop for whatever reason. I feel very sad when I talk to women who have been told to stop or never really got going again because of mis information from well meaning health professionals.

I am always amazed by how many women happily give there babies cows milk with stuff taken out and other stuff added thinking that they are giving there baby something which is the same as Human milk. Its not even close, in most cases it will not kill the baby however it is meant for baby cows. An Animal whilst cute and wonderful is not similar or the same as a human and has a vastly different digestive system.

Oh and on a final note, why is it that a woman who is promoting breast feeding is smug and insensitive?
Has anyone seen the recent news about cancer patieits who are using breast milk in their fight against cancer? In some cases it is the only food that they can keep down during their treatment. There are hundreds of reasons why breast milk is the first coice of many parents. Its time those reasons were out there on posters. A simple google search will find many.

    .

Cant even believe I'm getting involved with this but I'm fed up of hearing this argument that if a woman is unable to breastfeed it is the result of her not doing it properly or bad advice from health professionals or she hasn't simply given it a proper chance. A woman's body is designed, of course, to be able to breastfeed. In theory it is also designed to be able to see, hear etc., but not everyone can do these things and not through their own failing.

What if your baby is losing weight at a rapid rate, you are spending every single God given hour feeding and other times expressing, you have seen every kind of breastfeeding expert going (even close access to a friend who is a qualified expert) and been reassured by all that baby is latched properly and all signs she is taking milk are occurring (except the gaining weight), you have tried all advice on how to get your supply up but it just isn't working, you have been diagnosed with mastitous for the umpteenth time despite doing all the lump massaging afro-combing that you can face, you're fed-up of seeing your baby spitting-up your blood and your getting through nipple cream at an alarming rate. You are crying all the time and your partner just doesnt understand. You will do anything it takes for it to work but in the end it doesn't????? What do you do then???

You have no choice but to concede that to feed your baby formula milk from the supermarket is the only way you are going to be able to help your baby thrive and yourself to become sane again. Pretty much in the same way that you yourself was likely fed as a baby. You turned out all right, didn't you? (thats a hypothetical you not actually you) Surely that is the best you can do after all else has failed?? You do not need some smug git who had no problems or overcame their problems saying that it was from lack of trying and now you are sloppily feeding your baby junk. Keep it to yourself!

I'm due to have another baby soon and will again try everything I can to breastfeed him but if I can't I won't appreciate someone coming up and saying "ooh it makes me really sad that you haven't had all the information you should about it and that you have not been doing it properly" which is the type of thing I hear people saying. Lets face it, it happens easily for a lot of people, other people need tonnes of help and information. If it was something that was that easy and natural for everyone, we wouldn't need all this help, information and support.

  • this is getting rather off-topic, but it is obviously very sad when somebody can't feed and really wants to.

At least 90% of mothers could still be feeding after two months - (unless Swedish and British mothers are medically different) - but less than 50% actually do. I realise that it's going to be difficult if you are in the small percentage that can't, but let's not forget that there are many more that can, and they could do with some encouragement and support before they give up. Promoting it, as a healthy choice, is hopefully encouraging people to be more positive about it.
