Laptop Insurance

Hi

I bought a new laptop just over a year ago but now I need to get some insurance or cover plan on it incase of damage or breakdown (which they all do and mine will sometime).

I have in the past bought computers or laptops from PC World or Currys where they offer you thouse Whatever Happens cover plans which has always been good for me. Im sure that you know this plan offers you unlimited free repairs while covered, and I have used it to repair damage that had been caused by my children such as them spilling cola on the keyboard but also to fix problems such as the screen not working.

Obviously I did think when I bought this new laptop that I would need to get some form of cover plan/insurance sorted out for it but left it to run on the warrenty for the 1st year and then see if I can get the Whatever Happens cover on it, now that year is up I want to get it covered properly but I have a horrible feeling that I cant get Whatever Happens cover ue to not buying the laptop from PC World or Currys so I left looking for something that offers me the same as what I had before. I really do need cover that is going to offer me free unlimited repairs for breakdowns and accidental damage.

Has anyone had to deal with this before? What is on offer out there?

Thanks in advance

You have to weigh up if it's worth it.

Firstly if you have good contents home insurance, damage and theft (including out of the home if added) is covered.

Extended warranties in the main are a rip off. Most IT equipment will fail within the first few months of use if there is a faulty component and this will be covered by a manufacturers warranty.

Weigh up how much this "extended" cover costs, in most cases, if you laptop fails in 3 years time, the component will either be cheap and easy to replace (hard disc is most common), or the money you wasted on the warranty will have been put to better use buying a faster and cheaper laptop x years from now.

Better to buy from a good retailer (that is not PC World, they are the worst), such as John Lewis (who will price match) and get an additional years warranty free.

Search the forums for discussions on extended warranties and the mess PC World make.
