I find I always have trouble sleeping if I haven't had any exercise or taken the dog for a long walk. Sometimes the radio or TV on low helps me to sleep. (especially if it's Newsnight!)

hello dippydan, can you give us a bit more info on your daily routine? is this a recent thing?

you might just need a body clock reset
  • Do for yourself what parents do for their little children: develop a bed-time ritual. Doesn't matter what the actions are but you need to do the same things, in the same order every night without fail. It's a bit like cognitive training so eventually your mind and body will know that when you perform your set actions, they will know you're going to be going to sleep. This worked for me

Lavender smells - oil or essence - I've been using Badger's sleep balm which is essentially lavender stuff mixed with vaseline I suspect. Rub it onto temples and wait for sleep to come your way. Get it in Boots or, I suppose, any good chemist.

Nothing medicinal or herbal about that I hope.
  • a bath and hour before you want to sleep has been scientifcly proven to help (something about your temperature increasing then decreasing)

I think if you have a cool shower or bath your body naturally tries to raise its temp this might help (the reverse is why people drink hot tea in the desert as the body will try to cool itself down)

it might sound stupid but counting backwards from say a high number like 400 with your eyes closed has a good relaxing effect

but really as has been said elsewhere if this is a recent development you may just need to find the underlying cause...

good luck I hope you find a remedy

Try a sleep CD, I use one called deep sleep, every night. It works wonders! Even helps him fall asleep! :)

  • The BBC news 24 always sends me to sleep, but my brother swears by the Parliement programme. I do have a timer on the tv so it goes off at 11.30pm. Sometimes I read in bed that sends me to sleep but them I have to get up to turn off the light (no bedside light)

I'd second the use of lavender on your pillow (it sorted out my husbands inability to get to sleep a few years ago) and when I was a lot younger I used to count (forwards not backwards for me) just counted at a reasonably slow pace and sometimes try and visualise the numbers in your head. Also if I got to 30 or 40 for example I would just start from 1 again as its more about just focusing on relaxing, than trying to count to too high a number
