paint for lead flashing?

Anyone know what paint is best to use on lead flashing please? I know you're not meant to but we've got some pretty grotty stuff on part of our house and I don't really want to clean it as it might reduce its thickness by half!! It's been painted before - sort of half painted, half old lead now.
If cleaning really is the best option, would paint stripper be the best?

Thanks.

Yep, paint stripper to get the old paint off then some wire wool so it is an even colour then either just leave it to weather or apply some lead oil

A lazy paint option is to paint it grey. Lead seems to carry paint quite well.
