I've got to quit too and am planning to do it this week. I did read the Allen Carr book a few months ago but unfortunately the kids were home from school so I didn't really take it in and after a day with them I just needed to pop out for a fag :(

Go for it Moggins ! I'll agree the children being around isn't a great time to consider stopping :) I have found it so much easier than willpower and nicotine replacements, my eldest was so pleased when I stopped. I am now addicted to that new Extra 'Fire' chewing gum.
Think hubby is quite shocked I've made it this far and he has started to smoke only in the garden.
    Need any support then shout!

Pilgrim, you've hit the nail on the head there ! Since I've stopped I've 'no spend' days are easier. Like you say take a £10 out, break into it for the ciggies, pocketful/purseful of loose change where does it go ? Really can't account for it.

Started at college aged 17,(how did I afford that ?) easily fell into a 20 a day habit for the last 21 years.

Well, generalising wildly here...packet of twenty a day...£5 per packet (the days when it was less than a fiver balanced out with days when I smoked more than 20)...365 days in a year...10 years...£18,000...and thats probably understating it just to stop me beating myself with a blunt object.

    I feel like crying.

I gave up about 15 months ago, when I found out I was preggers, had given up before, but started up again. Even though I now think the smell is rotten, can breathe properly etc, I would still sell my first born for one! If you are giving up, I suggest putting the money you would ordinarily spend in a jar or something, I didnt bother and don't see the financial benefit at all!

im trying to convince OH to give up, alas he seems somewhat reluctant.

I cant bear the money wasting, and im not that well, so it cant really help.

    35 a week X 52 weeks = 1820

Although I gave up diet coke and saved myself almost a grand a year, one thing at a time....
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Lynz I think most smokers would like to stop but it's the fear of stopping.
It's the only habit that you want to do when you can't and hate doing when you do !(Carrs words - sort of !)

  • One tip that might help people is:

If you want to try the NRT method (patches, gum, lozenges etc) but find that the cost too excessive then go to Boots and ask to join their stop smoking service.

They will give you as much NRT as you want for that six week period . Although they say that you should only need to have as much as you need for a week, if you ask for more then they normally give you lots.

I have countless lozenges saved over from the last time I did it.

That said, it hasn't made me give up smoking but then again, Allen Carr did not work for me either. :(

I would love to try hypnotherapy but don't have the readies...

Mercuryrising - do you mean that Boots will give you NRT for free - fantastic if they do - will be carting OH down there on Saturday (he's already tried the Allen Carr method - 3 times).

Also read on boots.com that you can have a test to see how much carbon monoxide is in your blood. Has anyone tried it and if so what's involved?

  • Well they will give you as much as you need for six weeks for a prescription fee of £6.50. That usually works out at well over £100 of NRT if you're on patches or if you say you need a lot of lozenges or gum.

It's worth a try - I find NRT useful for saving money as they replace cigarettes. 5 lozenges are enough to last a day - they are less satisfactory than ciggies but do work in dealing with cravings. But as for giving up, I'm not too sure.

They do carbon monoxide testing at Boots but it's nothing to worry about - it supposedly shows how much nicotine is in the blood but the equipment appears to be so old fashioned and inaccurate they don't really care about the result.
