Four years since last contact with creditors

In 2002 i owed my bank and a high intrest loan company around £7000. i became very deppressed coulldnt cope with it as i was making less than minimum wage and my debt was getting worse. I eventually decided to go abroad to live with a friend without telling anyone that i was going (including friends and creditors). I have no family, so it must have appeared like i vanished into thin air! After a year of being away, i decided to return to the uk but never went back to where i used to live. Instead i settled in totally different part of the country about 500 miles from where i used to live. It has been 3 years since my return now and none of creditors have found me, I do not have a bank account and get paid wages into a friends account. I havent applied for any form of credit for 4 years. Do you think after a further 2 years (totalling 6 years since they last had contact with me) that they can still come and get me?

Your advice would be really appreciated.

Hmm, well as soon as I start saying walking the moral/legal thing line is a good thing people on here start getting upset at me (hey people, just play the game :)), so I suppose I ought not to say that what I think you've done is pretty cool but that if you play your cards right for just 2 more years it seems likely that you can get away with it.

You've come this far, I'd say go for it. Just be careful!

You do have to realise that you will need to pickup your life at some point, and sort out the consequences of anything that's happened. Getting credit again won't be easy :(

Well if you won't walk the line Amos I damn well will. If you spent it you have to pay it back!

Have to agree. This isnt the "How can I not pay my debt" board - but people who want to repay their debt!! Every penny we ever spent.

It sounds as though you are living a half life to me. Doesnt sound like much fun or very independent to not have a bank account/get your wages paid into a friends - how do you know your friend wont stitch you up? (It does happen!!). Don't you ever want a mortgage? If you want to live like a fugative for the next 2 years, go for it, I'd rather have a life though!!

Do the honest, decent thing & pay it off!!

Inclined to agree with you broken hearted. At the end of the day you may have all kinds of problems. You WILL need a bank account of your own at some point ( eg my employer states they wont pay into anyone elses eg my partners should I wished to) You may as well face the music, the sooner you get on with it, the sooner the situation can be resolved and you can start living in the "real world" instead of being completely under the radar.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

i think i am wrong but,

If the companies involved already have a CCJ in place for the debt then are'nt they allowed to chase you for the debt indefinatley?

    sure i am wrong???

I'm not even sure they got a ccj against me as i wasnt around. But i thought ccj's only stay on your credit record for 6 years? am i wrong?

if you dont hear from or contact an 'ordinary' creditor, the debt is written off after 6 years by the limitations act.
a default stays on your credit file for six years.
if your creditors have obtained a CCj (before the 6 years are up) there is no 6 year limit but they have to go back to the court to enforce it.
the CCJ will fall of your credit file after six years but as above the CCJ is still enforceable.
so the answer to your question of can they come and get me is 'maybe'.

I think what you have done is utterly immoral - actually, it is a kind of theft. We rightly criticise the banks when they stoop to underhand methods, but this is worse. You should contact your creditors and make arrangements to pay the money you owe them.
