Rounding-up of final readings

???Hi,
I took your advice and switched both my suppliers.
Scottish Hydro/Scottish Gas to Power Gen.
The Hydro change went as smooth as it could but Scottish gas seem to be trying it on.
My last gas reading (given to both parties) was 02939 and sent on the 03/12/04. On the 30/12/04 I received Scottish Gases final bill with a reading of 03142, on the same day I checked the actual reading on my gas meter which showed it to be 03082.
I checked with Power Gen to confirme that the first reading, had been sent to Scottish Gas.
I phoned Scottish gas and they blamed Power Gen until I informed them that I had just finished speaking to Power Gen.
The point of this e-mail is, for this discrepancy to be highlighted on your tips section, as I am sure I am not the only one to have experienced this sort of rounding- up by Scottish Gas, or maybe others suppliers.
I hope this is of some interest to you, if not sorry for wasting your time.
Regards,
jxg

It is interesting. I've never had this happen to me before - is it because there was a gap between the date you read the meter and the date you actually changed suppliers, so they estimated the reading on the actual handover date?

It sounds unlikely, but might be the reason.

I'm sure that other times I've transferred they've just used the actual reading I submitted as the relevant one.
  • Hi,
the readings where read and excepted on the 02/12/04 (the day before my account was due to switch) as there was no delay, there should not have been any reason to round up my readings.
What I was realy concerned about was if that|if I had paid this bill as it stood and then paid my Power Gen bill when due, I would have paid for gas used between 02939 and 03142 twice with very little chance of a refund from either party?
    Regards,

Quite right. It's essential to check that the ending and starting readings tally - as you've done - to avoid this problem being at your own expense.
  • I had a similar incident. I moved in to my property a couple of months ago. The first thing i did was to note the meter readings. I am currently with PowerGen for both elec and gas. They were infomred. However, i have just recieved my gas bill, i checked the Previous reading value and it was somewhat differnet. I phoned them up and was told that because i informed them on the monday and i moved in on the friday, they assumed this reading was for that day, and not from the day when i moved in. Thus estimated the ammount i used. The electricty however was correct, and they were informed at the same time! thay have promised to credit my account however! Nice of them :D
if i had known then what i know now
