British Gas-direct debit payments

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. For the last two yeras I have been paying British Gas monthly payments by direct debit. However, this month the tried to take out £800 from my account. When I called to find out why I was told that since Sept 2007 that had been undercharging me each month and this was my amount due.
Is it not their duty to increase my debit depending on how my electricity I am using or is this my fault for not checking,
Any help and advice would be much appreciated,
