Broken Laptop Charger

Hi all,

I bought a laptop from an internet company in March this year and the charger has just broken. I had it tested and there is no electricity running through it, its dead!

What are my rights? I have been told that they can't be repaired, so should I expect a new one from the company that I bought it from? I have had a look and they seem to be quite expensive to buy new. I've always looked after the charger and there is no visiable damage to it.

Not sure what I can do, but I need it sorted as I need my laptop for work and at the moment I can't turn it on.

Many thanks for any advice.

could be a broken wire you need to check the t + c of your agreement you may find that something like this wont be covered.

The wires on the outside of the charger are fine, no damage that I can see. Not sure about inside the adapter as its says do not open.

Normally adaptors should be covered. Have you checked the fuse?

If it's definitely broken, get in contact with the company you bought it from

Yes I have changed the fuse and still nothing. I have e-mailed the company today, there is nothing on the original e-mail about faults or repairs, so i'm not sure what there policy is.

Can I reasonably expect a replacement? I just don't want it to drag on as I need my laptop for work.

It's most often the case that they'll send out a replacement charger.

Oddly enough, the best manufacturer for doing this is actually Dell. Strange, eh?

Will they want me to send my original charger to them? (I'm just thinking of how long this is going to take!)

I have no experience with Dell, so can't comment! Must admit, I've not heard many good things about them though?!

  • It's rare for a company to turn down a request of this nature - as has been said, they'll probably replace the charger for you, as they can't be repaired cheaply or easily. However, you'll have to give them a reasonable amount of time to arrange this.

If it's urgent, you may need to buy one, and use the replacement as a spare.
Any advice or opinion is only informal advice to the best of my knowledge. Just covering my back, yadda yadda.
