cold sore cream - Any alternatives to Zovirax?

I've had a look to see how much Zovirax costs [£5.80] and was wondering if anyone new of any generic types which contain the same active ingredient as Zovirax.

I'd also like to know if I can get this on the high street if possible rather than having to purchase online. If there are any online shops that you know of that might be of use please post them as well.

Thanks

  • I had a look earlier and saw one going by the name of Soraway which was selling at 99p. The only thing was though you'd have to make a purchase of £40 to qualify for free delivery so not much use really.

If anyone knows anywhere were I can purchase Soraway then please let me know.

The active ingredient in zovirax is aciclovir, if that's any use to anyone.
Edit - Tesco do an alternative, currently on offer at £2 until 6 Sept according to mysupermarket.

  • I just found this one in ASDA's for £2:

And this one in Tesco for the same price:

Though it says Waitrose do one for £1.59. I'll check it out sometime later in the day.

    Thanks every one!
  • Poundland!

Pinewood brand, tho some stores seem to stock Galpharm.

It's in a silver/grey box, with the medicines. 2g, 5% Aciclovir. Works just as well as Zovirax- and trust me, I've been in a good position to compare over the years!

One word of caution though, whilst they usually have it in stock, over the winter they can run out frequently- so at that price always make sure you have a spare, unopened box in the cupboard- as obviously when you need it, you don't have time to mess about!

I used to get cold sores quite often (especially when I eat salt and vinegar crisps which is weird) and found Zovirax to be rubbish. I used to use one in a yellow tube but for the life of me I can't remember the name, I think it started with a C.

I've tried the Tesco one pictured above and it didn't work very well for me.

Last year I went on a cruise and stupidly didn't take any cream and I felt a cold sore appearing, luckily they had some ' Blistex relief cream' in the shop which worked overnight. I've used it a few times since and I think it's brilliant, I just put a big blob on at night and it's usually 'gone' by the morning.
