a webpage suddenly appeared stating "in private is turned on"
can anyone explain what it means and how it suddenly appreared?
ta for any help anyone can give.

Are you using Firefox?
If so private browsing means that your cookies and history of that session are not stored.
You will find it under Tools0 -

ok i opened a new tab (google) then clicked on the right hand side safety then selected in private browsing
in private browsing opened up so do i now select another new tab (google is my home page) and carry on browsing

Can't help you with IE8 but it is something you can use or not use in FF0 -

You can browse normally or "in private" in IE8 (and other browsers).
It's up to you which you choose. But - "in private" doesn't store "private data", cookies, history and so forth. Normal browsing does, which is often useful for seeing where you've been, going back to your history, remembering site settings and so forth.
When you open IE it should open in the normal mode (unless you've changed the settings), to open an "in private" window, use the InPrivate Browsing option from the Tools menu or press Ctrl+Shift+P
That new window will all be "in private" the other window will be "normal" you can have multiple tabs in both.0 -
