Where I live (Ipswich and surrounding area) petrol retailing is now left to the big players. I've noticed the remaining big players are no longer competing against each other and are raising prices (I don't just mean price rises due to the increase in crude oil prices). My local Sainsbury's no longer undercuts the competition. What's happening in your area? I do hope the pipeline card scheme gets under way we need it to fight back.

My local Tesco (1.5 mile away) is 1p more expensive than the nearest Asda (3 miles away), after reading a few of the previous threads when I went to fill up with diesel today I asked the girl on checkout if they still did the price match system, I got told they used to but she only re-directed me to customer service, as I hadn't got too much time available I'll have to go back tomorrow to see if they'll match the local Asda. As it cost's me over £50 to fill from empty

The Tesco is nearer and more suitable for me and I don't go near Asda if I can help it (or that part of town due to building works) but next time I'll be in Tesco's I will ask the question to CS desk.

I have noticed on the petrol website via this site that the more independant garages are a lot more expensive again though.

Maybe if we all went to the big shops customer services desk's and complained they might decide to reduce the cost?

good old ipswich, diesels getting dearer and dearer, 95.9p still at sainsburys and 99.9p 1/4 mile away at the esso near mine, seems daft to me, garages seem to charge what they like.

All of the garages in my area charge the same at the moment, and one a less than 3 miles away is 2p cheaper seems they only price with who they want to now

If it's any consolation, I always fill up in Ipswich when I go to the football. Still cheaper than Cambridgeshire.

I assume you're checking https://www.petrolprices.com for the cheapest local petrol?

Now as to whether my season ticket was good value for money this year ...

There is very little margin in fuel for the garages - supermarkets just offer it as a service in most cases as you tend to buy other stuff there as well. At the end of the day its market forces - buy where its cheaper or just live with paying 1p a litre more if its closer and easier to get to. Remember that most of the cost of fuel is Tax, and the rise in the cost of crude is being driven because we use so much of the stuff!

There are a lot of local pressures as well. I know for a fact our local Tesco's could reduce the prices by a couple pence per litre but if they do, the other local garages could not compete with that as they dont have Tesco's clout with prices and sales volume up here.

So its a case of you cant do right for doing wrong, The big boys pull the prices down a bit, they local garages close, Tesco are the bad guys. Tesco keep the prices at a local level, they are slated for keeping prices too high for their own benefit. What do you do!

The prices have gone up so much around the country that at last the majority of the UK are paying what we in the Highlands have had to pay for and campaigned against for years, with little success or UK wide support. It seems that Tesco, Morrisons etc are desperately trying not to go over 99.9p per litre for diesel up here, so the rest of the UK is fast catching us up as last! In the remote far north, the 100p per litre has been a damaging fact of life for a long time.
