Computer will not switch off

Hi
Can anybody help me.
I have just finished installing a new copy of XP on a computer I have just built, but for some reason when I shut it down, the screen goes blank and I can hear the HDD shut down, but the PSU and Cpu fan still keep spinning. When I try to switch it off with the power switch, it doesn't make any difference, and if i push the switch again, the computer just boots up again. I am using an old Emachines case with an MSI KM2M-combo motherboard, AMD Athlon 2000+CPU, 512 DDR RAM. I have set the BIOS to power off, installed all the drivers I can find, and set windows to shut down using the power options in control panel, but all to no avail. I am now in a quandry. I am open to any other ideas.

you mean it keeps going when you cut off power from the mains switch?
  • sorry i forgot to say . turning off the mains power is the only way it will stop, but as soon as it is switched on again the power supply and CPU fan starts spinning, then I push the on button and it boots normally.

From the sounds of the spec, it sounds very old.

If you can get the pc on the net - you could try doing some windows updates and see if that helps.

Power buttons usually restart the pc if pressed twice so that sounds okish.

Other than that only thing I can think of is putting on a different OS on it - linux and see what happens with that.

You might be better off getting a higher spec motherboard and cpu to be honest but if it comes to that - you might as well buy a new pc.
  • If the PC starts up even partially as soon as mains power is applied there is something wrong. I have normally found this to be due to a dodgy motherboard - are you certain it was working properly before?

One thing you could check though, if the motherboard has a 20 + 4 power connector, are you using a 20 + 4 PSU?
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

I have always found that pressing and holding the power butten for about 10 seconds will swith the pc off.
  • hi taffy
yes it is a 20+4 setup on the board and sicker I have tried holding the power button for 10 to 20 seconds and all it does is restart the computer ,it wont turn off
  • Hi again taffy
I did test it on the bech before putting it into the case and it seemed to be working alright then, so any other ideas please.
  • Hi again people
I have done some more checking and I have noticed than when my computer has "shut down", but the PSU and CPU fans are still running, the HD light comes on and does not go off unless i disconnect the power, then when the power is reconnected the HD light is still on(steady light,no flickering), until i press the power button, when the HD light goes out and then comes on as it boots, just as a normal system would. Very odd i think. Anybody got any idea as to why this might be.
