Dodgy furniture dealings?

Went into a small shop in a nearby town selling "famous name" branded furniture at knock down prices.

Salesman tells me they clear out warehouses of unwanted stock etc.

We saw a beautiful dining suite which we were very interested in buying, but alarm bells are ringing. They dont take credit cards but require a 10% deposit cash or cheque, balance on delivery. why would they not take credit cards - could this be a sign they are dodgy?

also the shop is not in the phone book or yellow pages.

The salesman was initially very helpful and genuine but when I tried to negotiate a discount he got quite rude and aggressive with me. This left me worrying about what he would be like if the furniture never turned up or if there was a fault with it.

Not sure whether to forget it and buy from somewhere that accepts plastic instead where you have the payment protection.

There is a place like that where I used to live, bought up ex show house furniture and old warehouse stock. They never took plastic either. They are not in the phone book as they are only open Sat and Sun mornings so no-one around to take calls. The reason they didnt take plastic was because of the costs to them. You could pay cash or cheque only and either pick up yourselves or pay £20 for delivery. We never had any problems and bought a few bits and pieces over the years saving us a bundle - our 3 piece for example cost us £600 and was in John lewis for over £3k.

Basically you are buying as seen - its up to you to check it over in the shop/warehouse before you decide to purchase. As costs are so low it is harder to knock them down although I got £50 of a leather sofa because of a scratch on the side (wasnt going to be seen) and then when they came to deliver it, got another £20 off as they put a small rip in the underneath getting it past a door handle

Sounds like a good place youve found.

They are not selling ex display items so the first time we will see the stuff is when its delivered.

Ive decided I just dont trust this guy so am not going to proceed.

It just seems too good to be true, so it probably is as Trading Standards say...
