Please read the small print of your policies. Many companies only insure monthly and not for life. This means they can cancel at any time they like. Petplan may be more expensive but they do insure for life. To be on the safe side please check it out. Better safe than sorry.

I have Petplan Insurance for our pup and feed him Arden Grange. I have tried other dog foods in the past when I foster dogs and have found Arden Grange to be the best so far. His poos are firm and I don't get no doggy smell from him. It is not cheap but as they don't need that much a big bag lasts for ages. RC and JWB are also good foods but really you should feed him on what you can do for your budget.

I'll give axa a ring later and see what they quote me. Petplans excess seems a bit steep.

Petplan do a pet value policy that is cheaper but is a per condition policy which is ideal if you need treatment in an emergency. You can also swap to the for life policy with them when you are more financially able to. That excess is £75. Still expensive though for what it is but I wouldn't go with anyone else because petplan is the number 1 company and so trusted.

Mind you saying that my mum had two dogs when I was a kid, a GSD and a BC and neither needed a vet in their entire life and nor did our cat. It's a risk if you have no insurance.

We feed James Wellbeloved and find it very good. We've fed Burns in the past and liked it too, however, one of our gang didn't do well on it at all, losing body very quickly and rather than scutter about feeding different brands to different pooches we switched them all to JWB.

That said, we are about to switch to Barking Heads and the cat version too for our cat. Our animal feed suppliers are raving about it and have said quite categorically that it is the best dry complete dog food they have seen in all their years in business, which is quite something.

Got a bag of JWB today. I'll start weening him onto a different food today. See how he gets on. If I'm not happy with how he is on it I'll swap to one of the others till I find the right one for him.

Barking heads looks really good, I'd be interested in hearing peoples opinions of that. My cats are currently on burns.

kimberley..any idea if petplan would exclude any conditions that were claimed for under their value policy if you later switched to one of their 'for life' policies?
