Planting for Pergola

Hello all,

Just had a pergola built on the patio, its approx 18ft square with trellis and planter on one side. Could people give me their thoughts on what to plant, I would like it to be evergreen and easy to look after, also how is it best to train so they cover the top of the pergola. Last question is, would it be worth planting now or should I wait until next spring? Obviously this depends on the plant I assume but any advice would be welcome.:money::eek:

Thanks all
Up the Rams !!

I have a pergola and two summers back bought a grape vine. This year we were amazed to find huge bunches of green grapes on it, and they are actually turning purple as we speak!!! I also have a scented jasmine and a lovely white clematis that flowers in the spring. It scrambles away over everything and it's scent is so strong you could almost be overwhelmed by it, in the nicest possible way.

    Good luck with the planting!

you can get evergreen clematis, or why not try something that will flower and fruit?
  • I have a climbing rose on each side of mine and some clematis, and passion flowers. The roses flower first followed by the clematis and passion flowers so it looks pretty for the summer, and still has geenery on it in the winter so doesn't look too bare. It is only a small one though.

  • And when should i begin to plant them? Thanks

  • Lidl have a special offer on clematis starting tomorrow, I think. From memory, it was £3.99 each or 2 for £6

I have had lots of clematis from Morrisons supermarket. They are a little smaller to begin with than the ones you'd get from a garden centre but they cost less than two quid each and they soon romp away once they get their roots in the soil.

If you buy established plants in pots you can plant now. You will need to ensure they don't dry out in their first year and potentially wrap them up in fleece over winter if they are in an exposed position until they have established properly in the ground.

I have a dessert grapevine, two clematis and a golden hop on my pergola. The hop was planted to cover the pergola initially, I now keep it hacked (and I mean hacked) back although I have got some hanging bines of hops on it now. I will eventually dig the hop out now that the grapevine has established itself right over the top and I have hanging grapes all over it this year.
