Nat West overdraft use

As the SLC have made a complete shambles of one daughters application, it's highly unlikely that my daughter will have her loan and grants at the start of term. I have assured her as much as poss that we'll find the money somewhere until they sort it out.
She has opened a Nat West account and we are wondering at what point she'd be able to use her overdraft. Could she simply put any amount of money in the account in order to use it or how does it work? Thanks:confused:
