Laptop recs

Hi All,

Im looking to buy a laptop, i have roughly £600 to spend, i want it for the internet, playing games (the sims 2) lol, so would need a good spec laptop.
I need one that would support the sims games as my cousin loves playing them so when she stays over i can keep her quiet!

Any recs?? Or what should i look for?

  • Hi,

In order to get the best laptop for your needs I suggest you break down your requirements. For example, you have stated you require to use the internet (I will assume over a wireless network) and also to play games such as the Sims 2.

Taking wireless element first, pretty much all laptops these days come with a wireless card installed. Using standard 802.11 a/b/g/n (don't worry about them too much, think of it like different languages that card can speak). I assume you already have a internet connection with a wireless router.

    Sims 2 recommended requirements:
    Recommended System Requirements
    1.6 GHz Processor
    512MB RAM
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98
    5GB (or more) HD Space
Any ATI Radeon 9000 series video card or any NVidia GeForce4 or GeForceFX Video Card.
    DirectX 9.0 or better.

So a laptop such as this:

    Would suit your needs.

I prefer IBM (now Lenovo) products however these are more expensive. Choosing the H/W manufacture is your choice. By understanding your requirements will allow you to make a good decision.

    Cheers

Which Scar1 obviously doesn't. You'll need something with a proper graphics card onboard, not like the rubbish Intel one on the Dell he suggested.

"Nvidia" or "ATI" in the laptop specs would be a good sign.

ooops, tr3mor was good to correct me.
The machine I was looking at had a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330. Must have grabbed the wrong link.

  • How about a Dell Studio 15?

I agree, the studio range is more robust than the Inspiron range. There is also a 17 inch version and these can be picked up from the official ebay shop at decent prices. (RogerAlpine is a very reliable trader on ebay and they come with a 3 year warranty too). You can build the spec on the official Dell site to get an idea of discount you are getting.

I've recently purchased a laptop from here; it arrived the next day, cost £550, but £800 when I priced up on Dell Direct.
