Moving your phone from Virgin

A cautionary tale. Virgin upped our package from £18 per month (for Phone, Broadband and TV) to £30 without telling us. I rang and complained saying I wanted to leave but they would only go to £25 for 12 months if we payed by direct debit and paperless billing. We don't want to go direct debit as we have to pay when we have the money in our account. So I decided to try Talk Talk or Tiscalli for broadband and phone and just buy a freeview box. Talk Talk said they have no coverage in our area (even though we live near Stevenage) so could only offer us their essential package for £32 per month (no TV package).
Tiscalli said we'd have to convert the phone number to BT then ask again. So essentially we'd have to pay to join BT then ask them again.
All this because we have Virgin and these packages require a BT number.
So be careful as the deals you see, as in all things on offer, as they may have a catch.
Looks like we are trapped by Virgin. A nice ploy by them.
Maybe we should just use mobiles, a freeview box and use the internet round at the mother-in-laws or pay by direct debit.
Either way they have you by the proverbial 'short and curlies'.
