Just to update those who were asking, I have now bought the engagement ring for my girl.

Now just deciding exactly when and how to do it! Thinking about taking her to see a show and have a stay over somewhere....

its harder to see inclusions in a round brilliant cut ring than, say an emerald cut or a princess cut, i got my diamond and platinum rings all second hand to get the most for my money. I got a .42 vvs1 f/g princess cut diamond set in platinum, originally from Christopher Wharton for £550, worth £3000.

That sounds lovely :) Good luck! Did you go for one of the rings in the vote topic that you made in the end?

Just a note to say thanks to some of the advice on here - after proposing in Prague on Saturday night during a fantastic weekend away, we went ring shopping in the JQ in Birmingham today and my new fiance is delighted with her new engagement ring from Marlows in Warstone St.

Excellent, friendly staff - highly recommended. Also liked Newey's and Bicknells. Wasn't keen on a few of the jewellers.
  • All, I've been a long term reader of this thread following my proposal about a month ago and as a result wanted to thank each and every poster who offered sensible advice on what to look for, what to avoid and where to head for further research and advice.

As a result we picked up our ring on Saturday and couldn't be happier with it.

As well as reading a lot of this thread I was also searching for a jeweller with a good reputation close to my home to try and avoid a trip to London or Birmingham. What I found was a lack of information for my area (in and around Newcastle).

So, for those of you who, like me are based in the North East, I'd recommend you go and see Whickham Jewellers, the experience for us was first class from start to finish. We had an idea about what we wanted and after a long chat with a design and budget established they set about making the ring. Took a couple of weeks but is well worth it, it is superb, platinum ring with brilliant.72 D Si and 4 shoulder stones on each side which makes the overall ring just over 1ct.

  • HI

    CAn anyone help.

My partner and i have been searching for a ring and i fell in love with one at a independent jewellers. Platnium 0.40 pts ... SI...F....£1800. However he said he could do this in palladium for £1140.

However i have since discovered samara james and they do a similar ring (yasmin) Same grade of diamond but platnium for £1100 ish.

Am i missing something, Why would Samara James be so much cheaper?

Any help would be much appreciated
