Help needed with Microsoft Office Excel 2007

I purchased back in early July Microsoft Office 2007. I purchased the one pc user option rather than the three pc user option.
I have only really used Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and have noticed on the last few occasions that I have used Excel that everytime I try to format text i.e. in particular, make text bold that excel freezes. This is extremely frustrating. I am working from a laptop and am using Vista.
I have spent ages today trying to fathom what the problem is and it is lucky my laptop has not got thrown across the room as I am getting more and more upset that this simple problem exists and there does not appear to be a solution.
I have downloaded and installed today 12 updates for Windows including one for Microsoft Office and have also downloaded the latest Vista Service Pack.
It is possible that two excel files that I am trying to work with were created using an earlier version of Excel (Excel 2003) or Open Office Calculator but if this was the problem, it does not explain why when I create a new worksheet in excel that clicking bold causes the programme to think about things for ages/freeze/come up with message saying "not responding".
I dont seem to be having this problem in word although it does take ages to open.
I do still have open office on my laptop and can get this removed but I cant see this would interfere as I wasnt having these problems with excel when I first got it.
Someone has suggested I might have a nasty bug on my computer but I ran the virus software yesterday and nothing came up. I am doing more scans today though.
Can anyone help?
