Receiving chequs under a clubs name

Hi, First post so be kind, I have had a search though the archives but haven't really found anything.

We are a small sports club that are setting ourselves up. We have a standard personal account under our tresurers name at the moment which is doing us fine and giving us a very good rate of interest. The only thing we can't do that would be really nice is receive cheques in under our clubs name! In particular we are now getting ready to do a big event with all participants sending us a cheque as entry fee, it looks a bit dodgy asking people to write cheques to Fred Bloggs as opposed to Camberley Skaters :-/

Any advice appreciated

Dan

You have to go to a bank and ask to open a charity account (Midland do a good one). You will need 3 signatories which are usually the Treasurer, chairman and secretary of the group and when cheques need to be signed 2 of those will have to sign them. Anyone from the group can deposit money as long as they have the account number.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Don't those sorts of accounts have charges though!? We don't have much money and down't want to loose it this way.

I'm secretary of one in NatWest which hasn't incurred charges since it was opened in 1996.

Club Society accounts don't normally incur bank charges unless they are very cash or cheque intensive.

Just rename your club with your name and then no impropriety.

Or change my name via Deed Pole :p

Thank you all for your help. I phoned four banks yesterday and not a single one gave me this information! Most didn't even want to talk to me on the phone saying I needed to visit my branch.... That means I have to go into town... I haven't done that for years!
