Nissan Almera & Timing chain defect
Just wanted to warn the Nissan Almera owners and those who might be thinking of buying one.
Nissan Almeras have common problem which is related to a RENAULT timing chain. The timing chain stretches and cuases the engine to stall and not restart. My Nissan stalled when I was overtaking on a busy dual carriageway.
I took my Nissan Almera to a Nissan garage yesterday and they said the error codes refere to "Timing chain" and it'll cost £900-£1000 to fix.
Needless to say this is the last Nissan car I will ever own.

THE MORE PEOPLE THAT PHONE CUSTOMER SERVICES TO COMPLAIN ABOUT TIMING CHAIN THE MORE CHANCE THERE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE AS FAR AS CUSTOMER SERVICES ARE AWARE THERES NO PROBLEM WITH TIMING CHAIN SO THEY WON'T ISSUE A RECALL

im sure you have told us this before, but under a different user name. is this you trying to make it look as if there are hundreds of folk out there with this problem?
most cars have problems that can be common across the model. look at the vw touran with the abs sensor....work permit granted!0 -
i worked for Renault and knew of no Snapped or stretched timing chains at all. Most of them use belts. If you stick to the correct intervals for changing them you should never have a problem.
As has already been said, most cars have common faults on them, part and parcel of car ownership, they all go wrong at some stage of their life0 -
Nissan have big problem with Timing Chains in Almeras, even at low milage. It brings up fault light because cam and crank sensors detect timing is out. The chain stretches and isn't noisey.
If anyone has a smiliar problem they need to check tensioner, if extended by more than 10mm... then it needs replacing and that'll set you back by £900.0 -
The most important thing in maintaining any car is the oil change at the right interval. Miss that and you're asking for trouble no matter how reliable it is. Almeras are no different. People seem to think that because of their record for reliability, it's ok to neglect them. If the car is not running on good oil, and driven hard, things like stretched cam chains will occur. The early Almeras did have poor cam chains installed, which were especially sensitive to neglect. Please do not pay anything like £900-£1000 to replace them. Most Nissan dealers will tell you that the engine needs removed for such work. It doesn't. That's just a scam to charge you more money. My Nissan dealer tells me that if needed, he will replace for just £450 on my 2001 Almera which has 120000 miles on it and no sign of anything wrong. He'll even check and clean the crankshaft sensor while he's at it. I'm in Northern Ireland, but I'm sure there are a few reputable dealers in GB, who won't try to fleece you.0

+1
Its a known problem. Very nearly got 'caught' with one with that problem on a trade in (and they say its the motor traders who are dishonest...)
Cant see Nissan doing much TBH. In the same way as Peugeot havent done much about sticking flaps on climate control on 407's (£600 fix as its a dash out job), dual mass flywheel problems with Peugeot, Ford, VW, etc at £700 a fix, etc, etc.0
