Wood Chip Removal

What's the best way to remove wood chip? I know I shouldn't touch it but it's starting to peel in certain places. I really shouldn't touch it because I can see a very bumpy wall underneath, however it will take me too much time to cover it. The previous owners had interesting tastes - bright yellow and blue silk painted wood chipped walls. I do have a steam stripper but I have yet to use it, do I need to score the walls or something? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Having had a similar problem my advice would be not to try and remove it if at all possible. When we removed ours using a steamer and very sharp and large scrapers huge chunks of plaster came with it, so if you can fix it without removing then do so.

    Hi

The 'paper tiger' as discussed here might help you remove the woodchip.

Still likely to be hard work though, depending on how many coats of paint it's had. :-/

    Good luck! :)

Thanks. If I'm lucky it's only one. I think removing it is probably the best thing to do, hopefully it won't be too bad. Except for the plasterboard wall which I'll have to do by hand.

Use your steam striper, work from the bottom up (It'll help loosen the paper).
You'll find the paper will fall off.

Don't use those long handled striping knife's with a changeable blade, they dig the wall to much.

Use a good quality striping knife (Ridgley)

Be very careful striping the plasterboard walls.

Dont hold the steamer in one place for too long or it might blow the plaster .Ours did. The woodchip may have been put up because the plaster was cracking anyway so you might find the plaster is stuck to the woodchip and pulls off as you remove the paper. You can always buy some plaster and redo the bits that do come off.
