American Express cancel my card!!!

I have had an American Express Platinum Card for 11 months which I initially used to get the 5% cashback for the first 3 months which was ideal as I bought quite an expensive TV and more before Christmas.

With just 4 weeks to go to the first anniversary I log onto my account and as I am checking my statement it suddenly pops up saying "you card is cancelled" and before my eyes I actually see my cashback amount suddenly disappear.

I ring Amex because the online Message Centre is not working, they put me through to Cancelled Cards Dept where I am told it was cancelled because I hadn't used it in 6 months.

I tell them I received a letter from them a short while back about the dormancy fee they were introducing when you didnt use it for a year and that it made no mention of 6 months.

She just said that was their policy and as regards to the cashback she said she couldnt see any mention of that on my account any more - surprise, surprise.

I find this very underhand as I tried to use the Amex as much as I could but was finding it more and more difficult to find places that accept it. I wanted to use it to pay for the recent summer holiday but it was not accepted so couldnt even get the reduced percentage cashback there.

Well, I hope in anticipation for a cheque to drop through the letterbox but I don't hold out much hope.

Well technically they should of wrote to you to advise they were closing down the facility so maybe request a copy of this letter and which date it was sent to you.
    Totally agree very underhand practise.

That's terrible that they won't pay you that anniversary money considering you didn't end the agreement!
I have the same card but my car insurance comes out each year but not been using it as much as the cashback isn't all that great a deal unless you spend over 10k!
  • I received a letter this AM, dated Friday .... guess what, account cancelled before I have time to speak to them ......

I actually used the card a few weeks back (for £5) and paid it off on 2 September!! But I too received the dormancy warning and decided to quit the card anyway .... then I received replacement card!

So there we have it ... American Express, a fine example of right-hand, left-hand confusion and a total lack of customer care.

    Good riddance :p

Amex is not as popular as it is in the US. They charge higher fees than their competitors for transactions which is why many retailers in UK are refusing to accept Amex.

In a way good riddance to them.
