Time-Limited Tickets - how is this legal?

My better half was 50 last year and amongst her presents for this momentus occasion were a couple of gifts that had to be used by a particular date; 1. Tea at The Ritz for two, and 2. A day of pampering at The Ardencote Health & Leisure Centre. Due to circumstances beyond our control (i.e. we were rather broke) she was unable to use these gifts, which were not inexpensive. We did manage to extend the date for the Ritz (at a further cost of £25 for a 6 month extension) but still could not afford to get to London within the timescale. So, two expensive presents down the toilet.
My questions are these...both gifts/events were paid for in full but are allowed to expire....Is it legal and do I (on behalf of she who must be obeyed) have any recourse?
P.S. This iis my first post, so apologies if its not in the correct format, manner or place etc.:o

There is another recent thread on this very subject - suffice to say it's perfectly legal. Without wishing to appear sarcastic, which bit of "had to be used by a particular date" is illegal? It's down to the terms and conditions of the product. If you weren't going to be able to use them then the best bet would have been to sell them on via Ebay or otherwise.
Here is the other thread - it was in the "Praise, Vents, Warnings" section. Have a read.0 -
Whilst I appreciate your predicament, you could also compare it to concert tickets - if you can't make it on the day it's been booked, it's not the fault of the organisers.
Most vouchers have similar restrictions, in case the price increases or the venue stops offering the service (or indeed, many other reasons).Any advice or opinion is only informal advice to the best of my knowledge. Just covering my back, yadda yadda.0
