Experian can't find me...

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is in the right place but thought there may be someone around who could help me!

I've tried twice to find my credit file using Experian, about 4 years apart, the latest time was about 2 weeks ago. Both times it's told me that it can't find me! I don't understand why, I'm on the electoral roll, I've got a credit card, bank account, mobile phone, I've had gas and electric bills in my name, I've got a student loan etc etc.

Does anyone have any hints/tips on how to make it find me?

Thanks!

Caroline

It might be the way your address is entered with your lenders, a slight mistake can make some difference. You should contact Experian directly, they should be able to sort it out

What about Equifax, do you have the same problem?
  • I haven't actually tried Equifax, maybe I should? Or will that make my credit rating appear even worse?

    Hi,
Checking your own credit report will not affect your own credit rating, so you can check it however many times you wish! Equifax also do a free 30 day trial but make sure you cancel within the 30 days or you will get charged the normal monthly fee - you will need to enter credit card details but it won't be charged unless you go past the 30 days

    Hope this helps

    Debt free!
  • You need to phone them I believe! Search 'Equifax' on www.saynoto0870.com to find either an 0800 number for your landline, or geographical number for your inclusive mobile minutes. Don't call the 0844 number, it'll cost a relative fortune and you'll be on hold for at least 10 minutes.

I wondered why I never got the photocopy of my Passpost sent back but they did send everything else back.

I guess now my Passport number, even my wee biometric photograph, is on an anti-fraud/ID database for their use, supposedly to help me. But theyare make money from selling it to their customers.

Have you moved since the first attempt? If so, it's to do with your name(s). If not, concentrate on your address.

If I were you, I'd inspect the electoral roll. You can do this at your nearest public library. Pay particular attention to the way your names are recorded and the format of your address. An extra line may be inserted/omitted or the order reversed, where new build, a house name or a block of flats is involved or where a landlord has converted a house to flats. You'd be surprised how often discrepancies arise. It's not necessarily an error. Very often it comes down to a difference of opinion as to how an address should be formatted rather than an actual mistake.

With luck, it'll be purely a question of checking the register and sticking with that version. Provided that you're consistent when completing all your paperwork, you should be okay. When you apply for credit facilities, bank accounts etc. or to the credit reference agencies, ensure your name and address matches the details as they appear on the electoral roll.

P.S. Don't worry if your address is formatted differently on council tax bills and the like. That's of no consequence, but the electoral roll version counts when applying for credit ;)
