Personal Antivirus haunting me!!!!!!!

Shortly after logging on this morning, a pop-up window appeared -
"Critical System Warning. Your computer is infected with TrojanWin32.Agent.azsy......" and more blurb that I can't remember.
Maybe this was the wrong thing to do but I clicked on the pop-up and Personal Antivirus appeared; I ran it's scan which took all of three minutes and "detected" 47 threats. When I asked it to remove them, a screen opens for which payment is requested to remove the threats or whatever.
I already have free AVG and so ran that - this took over 40 minutes and detected nothing. ????
I can't stop the "Critically infected" and other windows from popping up but there is no way to action anything without payment. It seems as though the warning itself and the "virus software" I am directed to is something of an infection itself.
I am really thick about these things as I have never had any kind of problem. What do I do? Which should I believe? Are there some steps I can take myself? Or am I off to laptop hospital?
Please help; it's driving me nuts.

Sorry...I don`t know how to insert a link, but if you download and run an anti malware program called Malwarebytes, that should get rid of it .:0)0

Yes, you have a fake antivirus programme running, so much for AVG!
As posted use malwarebytes and I would change AVG to Avira or Avast.0 -
If MBAM doesn't fix it, I'd run Combofix, get it from bleepingcomputer.com...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

(For info - it took over an hour and found several things - inc the WIN32 thingy, then removed them all, restarted and Bob's your Uncle [well, Barry in my case].......)0 -

Will also check out bleepingcomputer website - best to be prepared methinks!
You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper. Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer.0 -
